Ocean Swim Training

Bondi to Bronte Training Program - 2016

The ever popular Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim Training Program returns again in 2016 for its 11th year. With the aim of encouraging everyone to get into ocean swimming shape, the program helps people understand the Bondi to Bronte course conditions, and ultimately to prepare for an enjoyable B2B swim!

The training group is open to all swimmers who intend on swimming the B2B, the Bondi Bay 800m or those who just want some ocean swimming skill development at the start of the summer ocean swimming season.

This year we are very excited to announce that Jarrod Poort will be attending our training program to lend a hand and share his knowledge of ocean swimming. Jarrod competed at both the London and Rio Olympic Games. He represented Australia in London for the 1500m freestyle and the 10km Marathon swim in Rio. Jarrod's experience and knowledge will take these sessions and your skills to another level.

The training program will take place in November over 3 sessions.

Sunday 27th November is the Coogee Island Challenge Ocean Swim and as part of our training program we recommend you swim at this event to simply blow out any cobwebs before the B2B!

Please note - We have scheduled the program so that the last session will be at Bronte on Saturday 26th November. We start at Bondi due to its very predictable conditions, allowing all swimmers to learn in a location where we can have many entry locations for the swimmers. We finish at Bronte so that all participants have the chance to tackle the conditions at the finish location.

B2B Training Group

Meeting at the Bondi Rescue Lifeguard tower on the promenade at 7:40am for 8am start.

The dates for this year are:

  • Saturday 12th November - Bondi
  • Sunday 13th November at Bondi
  • Saturday 26th November at Bronte

The cost is $80/per person cash on the first day.

What to expect: The training will start off at a steady pace in order to help build on the skills you'll need. As the program continues, we will be diving into more challenging drills.

Please note, we will not be swimming laps of Bondi or Bronte Bay in this program. It is designed to develop your ocean swimming skills, so it is advised that you do your own lap training on the side in order to get swim fit.

If you cannot swim 1km in the pool, then you need to do more swim practice before joining this group. We cannot have entry level swimmers joining this group, swimming in the ocean, as it could become a safety hazard.

The training session covers the following skill development topics:

  • Water entry for start of race
  • Negotiating the break
  • Rip identification and use
  • Slip stream swimming techniques
  • Dealing with other swimmers thrashing around you
  • Locating the buoys during your swim
  • Planning your entry into Bronte Beach through the break
  • Catching waves

Each swimmer will receive a high visibility swim cap which has to be worn at each session.

Each swimmer is required to bring: swimmers, towel, goggles, water, sunscreen and wetsuit (if needed).

Conditions: Please ensure that you make payment at Bondi during the first training session. If you are unable to attend all training sessions, the full training fee still applies. If due to the weather and/or surf conditions any of the training sessions have to be cancelled, no refunds can be offered.

Please complete the below online registration form to participate.

Ocean Swim Training Testimonials

"Last year I undertook the 4 week training program run by Stephen Ford in preparation for the Bondi to Bronte and the 800m Bronte swims. I chose to join the program conducted at Bronte Beach, given it's one of the toughest beaches in Sydney. Prior to this course my experience in the surf had been limited, and like many, I lacked confidence in changing and unpredictable conditions. Stephen's program was extremely well organised, teaching you how to read open water conditions and navigate your way in and out of the surf in the most efficient and effective manner, safely. He was well supported by a team of qualified and experienced lifesavers and open water swimmers, taking small groups of participants out with him in a variety of conditions. I have never seen anyone as calm and confident in difficult surf conditions as Stephen, he really knows what he is doing and he is so in-tune with the ocean! By participating in this course my ocean swimming skills have certainly developed and I definitely feel more confident about how to handle myself in various situations in the surf. The course was invaluable and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to prepare for the Bondi to Bronte or any ocean swim event, or for those that just want to develop their confidence in surf and open water." Kari, 2013 group

"I just wanted to say a massive thanks for your awesome ocean swimming lessons. Over those four weeks I have gained so much confidence and knowledge and that's all down to your fantastic instructing! Brilliant tips given over in an understandable way! Also your team who helped alongside you were great- always willing to help and give advice and all so friendly! I did the Bondi to Bronte swim today and I loved it! Wasn't sure if I was going to be able to but got to Bronte in just under 50 mins! A little away from the winning title I know (haha) but just to swim 2.2km in the ocean was excellent for me!! It was an awesome day! Thanks for all your help and great swimming sessions!!" Faye, 2013 group

"Thank you very much for the training. I don't think I would have attempted the swim under those conditions if it hadn't been for your training. What you taught us really helped me in the first meters of the race. I completed the swim, I really enjoyed it, and I wasn't the last one to reach the finish line! I'm looking forward to the next race. Best regards". Diego, 2012 group

"I really enjoyed the event. I wanted to write to say thanks, not just for the event, but for the four weeks of training. As a real latecomer to any swimming, let alone the surf, (this was the only chance I had left to swim with the 45-49s) I found your four weekends of training and encouragement invaluable for building my confidence enough for the swim. And after that exhilarating 14.5 degrees, it was like a warm bath". Michael, 2012 group

"I been meaning to write to you to thank you for the training sessions for B2B this year; although was my second year to it was as just as enjoyable as the first (even more maybe due to the significantly warmer conditions); it is a great program you run and last year it really gave me the confidence I needed to get out and tackle some of the more challenging swims including the B2B and Palm to Whale. We all really enjoyed the training; and will mostly likely be back again next year as it is a great way to start the summer". Greg, 2011 & 2012 groups

"Mark and I had a laugh on race day. We recalled you saying something like "check out the waves at Bronte and before starting, they're often significantly different at each beach". Sure, we thought, rolling our eyes. Like, how different can they be? As you said in your email "On the morning at Bronte, the conditions were rough and ugly ...". At Bondi the waves were gentle. Your point was proved...hence why we did the training i guess. To misquote Donald Rumsfeld: We didn't know what we didn't know. Nearly pulled the pin after seeing those Bronte waves, justifiably i would have thought seeing i wanted my first swim to be a happy experience, but the optimism of everyone at the beach convinced me that it was OK to go. Figured i had to trust you and your teams judgement,( plus the training we'd put in!). The pushing back of the 'old farts' start increased anxiety a bit but one minute out from the gun i asked the lifeguard nearby what Bronte was like."It's come good just as the race has begun" he said. That sealed the deal. The guards at Bronte were superb, especially those treading water in the swell at Bronte guiding the swimmers through. Appreciate all the work you put into making this event happen, happen safely and happen with a great sense of fun and accomplishment". Ross, 2011 group
